Geotechnical Engineering Lab

The laboratory is equipped with all modern machineries required for advanced research and consultancy services. All the equipments mentioned in the syllabus content of the undergraduate programme can be carried out in the laboratory. The dimension of the laboratory is 103.7 m2. The obsolete equipments and methods are periodically replaced with latest arrivals and methods, and the condemned equipments are used to explain the historical development. The spring type unconfined compression test was replaced with load frame technique. The compaction method of determining maximum density was replaced by Relative density test apparatus, in which the Maximum density is developed in a 75 cm x 75cm vibratory table with deck frequency of 3600 vibrations per minute with a surcharge pressure of 140g/Sq.cm. Field tests like Plate Load Test and Standard Penetration Test are demonstrated to students. The students theoretical knowledge is reinforced with practical problems by explaining the consultancy reports. Digital Geotechnical Systems are housed in a separate glass chamber. The triaxial testing machine with CPU is attached with an Electronics Instrumentation system in which the LVDT shows the display of pore pressure, deformations and load. The LVDT readings are interfaced with a Data Logger. This modernization has been extended to consolidation setup also with an introduction of LVDT. A computer with 40 GB Hard disk & 256 MB RAM is exclusively installed in the Geotechnical Lab along with a Laser Printer. The plummet balance application is demonstrated along with hydrometer analysis and its simplicity is being explained. The proctor compaction test in coupled with proctor penetrometer to explain its field significance.
