About Department

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2002. The Department offers B.E. (Civil Engg.), M.E. (Structural Engineering) and Ph.D. Programme under Anna University, Chennai. The Department has well experienced and qualified Faculty Members in various specializations such as Structural Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Water Resources Engineering, etc. The Excellent Infrastructure Facilities of the department propped the department in Research and Developmental activities in Structural Engineering in the field of Steel Structures, Concrete elements and also in Environmental Engineering. The department has excellent laboratory facilities to meet the requirements of undergraduate, postgraduate, Ph.D., courses in Civil Engineering and also to facilitate consultancy and Research activities. Our Faculty achieved recognition by being conferred with the best faculty awards and rewards from various forums. Besides, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) are signed with leading organizations. Students grabbed opportunities for higher studies abroad in renowned institutions. The department has received funding worth of Rs. 198.64 Lakhs from National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM) of Ministry of Textile (MoT) under "Education Guidelines - Enabling of Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles (Round 2.0). The department also has received funds from AICTE, DST-SERB, DBT and Anna University. The sanctioned intake of the department for the undergraduate level is 30 and PG level is 06. Faculty published quality papers with high impact factor in various reputed journals. The department has been recognised as apporved Research Centre by Anna University, Chennai with five esteemed faculty members serving as approved research supervisers.

The POs of UG Programme

• PO 1: Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization as specified in WK1 to WK4 respectively to develop to the solution of complex engineering problems.

• PO 2: Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions with consideration for sustainable development. (WK1 to WK4)

• PO 3: Design/Development of Solutions: Design creative solutions for complex engineering problems and design/develop systems/components/processes to meet identified needs with consideration for the public health and safety, whole-life cost, net zero carbon, culture, society and environment as required. (WK5)

• PO 4: Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research-based knowledge including design of experiments, modelling, analysis & interpretation of data to provide valid conclusions. (WK8)

• PO 5: Engineering Tool Usage: Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering & IT tools, including prediction and modelling recognizing their limitations to solve complex engineering problems. (WK2 and WK6)

• PO 6: The Engineer and The World: Analyze and evaluate societal and environmental aspects while solving complex engineering problems for its impact on sustainability with reference to economy, health, safety, legal framework, culture and environment. (WK1, WK5, and WK7)

• PO 7: Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics, human values, diversity and inclusion; adhere to national & international laws. (WK9)

• PO 8: Individual and Collaborative Team Work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse/multi-disciplinary teams.

• PO 9: Communication: Communicate effectively and inclusively within the engineering community and society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations considering cultural, language, and learning differences.

• PO 10: Project Management and Finance: Apply knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and economic decision-making and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, and to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

• PO 11: Life-Long Learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability for i) independent and life-long learning ii) adaptability to new and emerging technologies and iii) critical thinking in the broadest context of technological change. (WK8)

PEO1: Gain knowledge and skills in structural engineering which will enable them to have a career and professional accomplishment in the public or private sector organizations.

PEO2: Become consultants in Structural Engineering and solve complex real-life issues related to the analysis, design and maintenance of structures under various environmental conditions.

PO1: Ability to individually carryout the STEM based Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics research project.

PO2: Ability to write, present and publish technical articles in reputed international/national conferences and journals.

PO3: The skill developed by the student should be at a level of higher than the requirements in the appropriate bachelor program.

PO4: Ability to acquire in depth knowledge of engineering design concepts and application of the same to solve complex engineering problems.

PO5: Ability to find optimum safe and cost effective solutions in the development of mechanical systems taking into consideration sustainability, societal, environmental and public health aspects.

The Civil Engineering Graduates will be able to:

PSO1: Acquire in-depth knowledge of the Structural Engineering discipline, with an ability to evaluate, analyze and synthesize existing and new knowledge in structural design.

PSO2: Critically analyze complex Structural Engineering problems, apply independent judgment for synthesizing information and make innovative advances in a theoretical, practical and policy context.

PSO3: Conceptualize and solve Structural Engineering problems, evaluate potential solutions and arrive at technically feasible, economically viable and environmentally sound solutions with due consideration of health, safety, and socio-cultural factors.
